Preschool Days: Houses

In Preschool this week, I taught the letter H. I decided to do a theme on houses. We talked about all different kinds of houses that people live in as well as kinds that animals live in. We matched animals to their types of homes. We talked about the different things all houses have in common and how we like to live in a happy house. We read the story of the 3 Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf who blew down each of the 3 houses the pigs built. So then we reinacted the story and built each of the 3 houses. First we built a house out of straw (dried tall weeds from our yard). Thoses houses didn't stay put and blew off the table in one blow! Then we built houses out of sticks (wood sticks and mulch pieces from our flowerbed). Those ones also didn't really stay put well, and they blew off the table easily too. Last, we built some houses out of bricks (building blocks), which the kids were so excited to find that they could build tall buildings and they would not blow down!
We then got to paint birdhouses. The girls spent lots of time painting their masterpieces, while the boys slapped some paint down and were off to build cities out of blocks!
Last, we talked about how builders like Bob the Builder actually build real houses. We took a tour through our garage to see some of the tools the builders used on our house and left behind, like big pieces of wood, hammers and nails, tractors (Nate's tractor), shovels and rakes, carpet pieces, tile floor pieces, and several other things. Then we got to use real sand paper to sand down a big chunk of wood, just like a real builder would do. They loved it!!
