Kaylee’s Semi-Formal

The Middle School had their annual Semi-Formal Dance with a glow-in-the-dark disco theme.  Kaylee and her friends spent a lot of time planning the theme, creating a music playlist, and designing their outfits, shoes, hair, nails and evening plans.  Kaylee had a large group of girls come to the house to get ready for the evening, using her wall sized mirror in her room.  We captured photos of all the fancy ladies before transporting them in the Big Van to dinner at St. James Restaurant and then on to the disco night.  

Kaylee says: 

Semi formal was a lot more crowded than last year! It was a great turn out. Almost every song that was played, us girls would make a circle and jump and sing to the beat. By the first hour, my legs were already hurting! Songs that had a dance (wobble, cupid shuffle, I love my body, etc) were the most fun. Later on, I went on Monicas shoulders, and Bailey went on Abis shoulders it was so funny. Then they put me up in a stunt! Whenever a wrap song came on, we would be screaming the lyrics. Totally not cuss words aswell wink wink! Then the slow dance songs… oh boy! I had a feeling that Will was gonna ask me because he kept staring at me during the slow dance songs. So, I stayed far away from him as possible but, he asked me. I said no, and I could tell he was upset. But oh well! I still invited him to dance with us girls during the pumped up songs and he seemed to like that. After the dance was over, we went to Baileys house. We stayed up till 3am watching movies, talking, and playing games. Definitely one of the best nights!

Grandma and Grandpa’s visit

Grandma and Grandpa Hutchinson from Utah came to visit for a week in January.  We enjoyed having them here.  They got to experience 2 snow cancellation days turned shopping days!  And got to see lots of kids activities.  We love you Grandma and Grandpa!

Solo and Ensemble 2024

Jax performed in the District Solo and Ensemble festival.  He performed a piano solo “Ballad” by Chopin because it’s a piece we was really wanting to learn. He earned a gold rating.  He encouraged his buddy Andy to perform as well.  They are like 2 peas in a pod as far as piano goes.  They like the same classical music by Chopin.  And they both are so talented.  

Jax then performed a marimba trio with a could 8th graders from Garrett, Brady and Graham.  Of course they also did a superb job and earned a gold rating.

Jaxton’s Simplx Internship

Jax was able to secure an internship with Simplx on his short school days, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-5pm.  We’re excited for him to get a little experience into the family business, find out what Simplx is all about and get some hands on experience. 

Here he is at the residential education day, learning in devices and programming and talking to “customers.”

Grandpa’s 87th Birthday

Happy birthday Grandpa Routsong! 87 years! Grandma took Grandpa out to dinner and then brought him to our house for a Dairy Queen dessert with all the family. He wasn’t feeling very good when he got to our house, tired, physically and mentally a bit drained. After visiting with his kids and grandkids, and getting sung to and blowing out his candles, and laughing a bit, he announced that he was feeling a lot happier and better than before.  It was sweet to see him cheer up when being around his family.

Jaxton’s Eagle Rank

Celebrating Jaxton Routsong – Eagle Scout!

We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievement of 

Jaxton Routsong, who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouts!

On January 15th, Jaxton successfully completed his Eagle Scout Board of Review, passing with flying colors. This accomplishment is especially impressive, as less than 4% of Scouts achieve this prestigious rank.

Being an Eagle Scout requires dedication, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference in the community. Jaxton now joins an elite group of individuals who have gone on to lead in business, religion, and politics—an inspiring testament to the skills and values cultivated through scouting.

Please join us in congratulating Jaxton on this outstanding milestone. We are so proud of his hard work, perseverance, and the example he sets for others in our community.

Four Basketball Games this week!

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL:

High School team playing strong.

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity for the Oak Farm Falcons, with four games and plenty of practices keeping us busy. Here is a recap of our recent matchups and the growth we have seen in the team:

Game 1: Heritage Patriots (Monroeville, IN)
Coming back from Christmas break, our first game against Heritage was a competitive battle. While we did not secure a win, we were proud of the team’s execution and the intensity of our defense. A highlight of the night was playing a fifth quarter, which allowed all team members to gain valuable floor time. The progress in our ball control and overall play was evident, reflecting the hard work put in during practices.

Game 2: Canterbury Cavaliers (Fort Wayne, IN)
Traveling to play against the state champion program, the Falcons faced both Canterbury’s JV and C teams. In the freshman game, our defensive pressure stood out, forcing turnovers and keeping the game close. Though Canterbury edged us out for the win, the performance was encouraging. In the second game against their JV team, we showed resilience, narrowing the lead to just a few baskets in a strong third-quarter run. While we did not win, it was a testament to the team’s grit and determination. We are eager for the chance to face Canterbury again soon on our home court.

Game 3: Noble Whitley Warriors (Fort Wayne, IN)
At Sports One, the Falcons secured an impressive win over the Noble Whitley homeschool program. Our ball control and defensive strategy proved too much for the Warriors to handle. A standout moment was a ball recovery by Cooper Routsong and Ryan Kochanski, leading to Kochanski’s incredible two-handed slam-dunk—an Oak Farm first!

Game 4: Harlan Christian Hawks (Away)
In our second meeting of the season against the Hawks, the Falcons adapted brilliantly to the narrower court, using it to our advantage with strong defensive traps and forced turnovers. The Hawks’ focus on interior defense left us opportunities on the perimeter, and we capitalized with multiple three-pointers, building a lead of up to 30 points. The team displayed great composure and sportsmanship, earning another victory and making us proud.

As we head into another week of games and practices, we’re excited to continue building on this momentum. We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of the school and our fans—it means so much to the team.

Roller Skating Parties!

Roller Skating parties with Oak Farm are so much fun.  The kids all had so much fun skating.  Of course they need no help anymore and would rather skate with friends than with mom.  So I spent the time with other moms in the same position.  Always a fun night!!

Oak Farm Turns 25!

The mood was festive in the Wellness Center on Friday, January 24th, as approximately 200 guests gathered to celebrate OFMS turning 25! Party hats and noisemakers set the scene as Head of School, Candice Holbrook, kicked off the event with a few words of reflection. She then welcomed Phil Salsbery, Lorene’s husband, who shared heartfelt remarks about Lorene and OFMS reaching this milestone.

OFMS art students presented Tom Leedy, President of the Dekko Foundation, with a painting they had created as a token of appreciation for the foundation’s strong support of the school. Guests also viewed the Founder’s Video, which beautifully captured Lorene’s story and vision for OFMS.

To conclude the kickoff, Oakey, the girl from Oak Farm, led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday, followed by the traditional blowing out of the candles. Guests then enjoyed delicious birthday treats!

After the kickoff, Rod Collier, OFMS Architect, delivered a presentation on the history of the OFMS campus—its growth, design, and evolution over the years.

Falcons Close Out Season with Strong Performances Against Hamilton Marines

The Oak Farm Falcons wrapped up their season with two hard-fought games against the Hamilton Marines, showcasing resilience, teamwork, and determination.

Game 1 (JV Matchup)
 The Falcons battled against Hamilton’s JV squad in a gritty contest. Andrew McKinley delivered his best performance of the season, dominating inside with countless rebounds and blocks while contributing 10 points. Beckitt Lowe also scored 10 points, sinking three triples and a free throw. Cohen McCreery added 7 points and made a defensive impact with multiple steals.

Seniors Lex Moser and Devon Nichols anchored the defense, forcing several turnovers and finishing their careers with a strong performance. Additional scoring came from Charlie Brubaker (2 points) and Moser (3 points). The Falcons secured a 32-26 victory!

Game 2 (Varsity Matchup)
 In a highly competitive game against Hamilton’s varsity squad, both teams traded baskets in the first half. Cooper Routsong hit the Falcons' only three-pointer of the half, while Ryan Kochanski fought through Hamilton’s tough defense to keep the game close at 12-14 by halftime.

The second half was a different story—the Falcons turned up the intensity! A full-court press led by McKinley, Sami Al-Jabari, and McCreery forced multiple turnovers, allowing Routsong to catch fire with three triples in the third quarter.

As Hamilton adjusted to a man-to-man defense in the fourth, the Falcons took control inside, with Kochanski and Keyan Saylor combining for 11 points down the stretch.

Final Scores & Highlights:
 🏆 Kochanski – 18 points (game-high)
 🏆 Routsong – 17 points
 🏆 Saylor – 6 points
 🏆 Al-Jabari – 2 points

The Falcons closed out the season with an impressive 43-35 victory!

We will miss our seniors dearly, but the future of Falcon Basketball is bright!

Kaylee was in cheer again this year!  So much fun!  She is a flyer up on top of the stunts and loves every minute of it.  She loves being with her friends and leading the cheers.  Oakleigh has been such an amazing coach.  Lots of great memories!  Go Kay!

Sami Al Jabari

Siblings: Sarah Al Jabari

Sami started playing on the Falcon basketball team in 8th grade. After sitting out a year due to the lack of a high school team, Sami was encouraged by friends to continue playing throughout his high school years.

Sami’s advice for younger athletes is, "Don’t be afraid to join a sports team, even just to try it. It might become your favorite thing to do."

Looking ahead, Sami plans to pursue pre-med and attend medical school with the goal of becoming a doctor. Along the way, he also plans to continue playing soccer and basketball.

Lex Moser

Parents: Tyler & Summer Moser

Siblings: Lilly& Lincoln

Lex began his journey with the Falcon basketball team as a sophomore in high school and has demonstrated remarkable leadership both on and off the court throughout his three years with the team. Over the years, Lex has been a steady and dedicated player, helping to build a strong team dynamic and setting an example for his teammates.

One of Lex’s favorite memories from his high school basketball career was the team-building experience and the heartfelt talks at the team sleepover during his senior year. This moment stands out as a testament to the bond shared by the team and the importance of camaraderie in sports.

Lex’s advice for younger athletes is simple but powerful: "Enjoy the company and camaraderie of your teammates and work hard every day at practice."

Looking ahead, Lex plans to attend Grace College, where he will focus his studies on Environmental Biology. 

Devon Nichols

Parents: Dawn & Matt Nichols

Siblings: Desiree & Isabella

Devon played basketball from his 5th through 8th grade years at Oak Farm. During his sophomore and junior years, he served as a manager for the high school team to stay involved. In his senior year, Devon decided he wanted to be a player on the team, and he made that dream a reality.

Devon’s most memorable experience is any moment spent playing or practicing with the team and his teammates. He truly cherishes the support of his teammates and says, "It’s amazing to be around them." Devon is grateful to have had the opportunity to spend his last year playing on the team and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Devon’s advice for younger athletes is, "Always take a chance, never stop practicing, and don't dwell on mistakes. If you mess up, there’s always another chance, so let it go."

Keyan Saylor

Keyan is a homeschool student who joined the Oak Farm Falcon team in his sophomore year of high school. Since then, he has been a positive asset to the team, contributing not only with his athletic ability but also with his uplifting attitude and sportsmanship.

One of Keyan’s most memorable experiences as a Falcon athlete is the journey from losing most of the games to experiencing more victories. This shift has been a rewarding testament to the growth and effort of the team.

For Keyan, the greatest part of being a Falcon has been the friendships he has made along the way. He cherishes the time spent hanging out with teammates and playing in different leagues with them, creating bonds that will last long beyond his high school years.

Looking ahead, Keyan is uncertain about what he wants to pursue after high school, but he is eager to find a career he truly loves. Currently, he is exploring his options and gaining valuable life experiences to help guide his path forward.
